DAEU - Access to University Studies Diploma (Diplôme d'accès aux études universitaires)

General information

Adults who do not hold a secondary school leaving diploma, whether classical, general or a foreign equivalent, and who would like to undertake university studies can gain a diploma that is equivalent to the secondary school leaving diploma thanks to the Access to Higher Education Diploma (DAEU).

The DAEU (literary option) provides access to university studies. A course leading to the diploma is offered, at evening classes during the week and on Saturdays during the day, by the Luxembourg Lifelong Learning Centre in partnership with the Université de Lorraine. It confers the same rights as those associated with obtaining the baccalaureate or the diploma on successful completion of secondary education.

Admission requirements

On 1 October of the year of registration for the course, candidates for admission must have interrupted their initial studies at least two years previously. They must also fulfil one of the following conditions:

• be at least 20 years old on 1 October of the year the diploma is issued and provide evidence on that date of 2 years of employment, either full- or part-time, and payment of contributions to the social security system for the corresponding period; or
• be at least 24 years old on 1 October of the year the diploma is issued.

The following are automatically assimilated to employment for which social security contributions have been paid, for the corresponding period of time:

• any period of bringing up a child;
• registration with the Employment Agency (ADEM) for Luxembourg residents, and with a jobcentre (Pôle Emploi) for French residents;
• participation in a vocational training scheme for young jobseekers or young people wishing to gain a qualification;
• any period devoted to high-level sport.

Evening and daytime courses

The courses are organised so as to be compatible with working life. Classes are held in the evening on weekdays, and during the day on Saturdays, and last for about 10 months.

The teaching is varied and includes two modern languages including French and a choice of German, English or Portuguese, together with 2 optional subjects. The optional subjects include history, geography, mathematics and a modern language (English, German or Portuguese).
