General information

Basic education for adults is for:

  • people beginning to read and write in German or French who already speak the language
  • people who have learned to read and write in German or French and want to improve their basic skills:
    • reading
    • writing
    • arithmetic
    • navigating in an increasingly digital world

These basic skills shall constitute a solid foundation for more autonomous, more advanced learning in the future.

Structure

There is no charge for basic education. It is delivered in either French or German.

There are two options:

  • The basic classes are for groups of adult learners following the same programme. They are available each quarter.
    See basic classes
  • In the basic workshops, learners work in small groups on personalised programmes. They are available each quarter.

The training content is as follows:

  • oral communication: interviews, communicating over the telephone, presentations, etc.
  • work using genuine documents relating to private and professional life: enrolment forms, identity documents, public transport timetables, bank documents, safety instructions, etc.
  • numeracy skills and mathematical knowledge: basic operations, measurement, orientation in time and space
  • basic digital skills: knowing and using digital tools, online training

The training rhythm is adapted to the learners' socio-professional situation, varying from two to six hours of classes per week.

The programme is personalised. It is drawn up after a guidance session, during which the learners' individual knowledge and personal project are taken into account.

Classes are also organised by a number of associations and municipalities.
